Surface Area

Surface area and porosity are physical properties that impact the quality and character of solid phase materials. Materials with identical physical dimensions may exhibit entirely different performance profiles based on variations in the physical surface area of the two materials. Surface area measurement if an important analysis used in many industries, including catalysts, zeolites, MOFs, batteries, absorbents, artificial bone, pharmaceuticals, metal powders for additive manufacturing along with a wide variety of other applications and industries.

BET analysis provides precise specific surface area evaluation of materials by nitrogen adsorption measured as a function of relative pressure.

The surface area is determined by calculating the amount of adsorbate gas corresponding to a monomolecular layer on the surface of the material. The technique encompasses external area and pore area evaluations to determine the total specific surface area. BET is used to determine a range of disperse, solid microporous to mesoporous materials.

BJH analysis can also be utilized to define pore area and specific pore volumes through adsorption and desorption techniques. Using BJH analysis you can conclude pore size distribution independent of external area due to particle size of the sample.

FlowSorb III - Surface Area Analyzer

The Flowsorb III 2305 / 2310 provides single-point and multipoint BET surface area measurements with speed, accuracy, and reliability. Samples having surface areas from 0.01 m2/g to over 1,000 m2/g are easily accommodated.

FlowSorb III

The FlowSorb III measures surface area using the flowing gas method, which involves the continuous flow of an adsorptive and inert gas mixture over the sample at atmospheric pressure.

The FlowSorb III’s reproducibility is better than 0.5%. The FlowSorb III 2310 features a built-in Dewar elevator for completely automated analysis and rewarming fan for rapidly warming the sample tube to increase the speed of the sample analysis.

Unique Design

The secret of Gemini’s unique capabilities lies in the innovative use of sample and balance tubes. These tubes are identical in every aspect, including their thermal environment. The sample and reference reservoirs, like their associated tubes, are physically identical and are initially charged to the same pressure.

During an analysis, differential pressure between reservoirs is monitored. This common mode technique assures that any differential pressure is solely due to adsorption by the sample and not to factors that lead to variations in free space during an analysis.

  • The patented twin-tube design negates free-space errors introduced by thermal gradient variations or by initial mis-measurement of free space

A Small Footprint Packed with Features

  • Three analysis ports can operate simultaneously and independently of one another. Three BET surface area measurements can be performed in less than 20 minutes.
  • The TriStar II accommodates the use of nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, and other non-corrosive gases such as butane, methane, or other light hydrocarbons.
  • A dedicated Po port is standard, allowing the measurement of saturation pressure on a continuous basis. Saturation pressure can be entered manually, measured continuously, or collected over the sample.
  • Incremental or fixed dosing routines prevent overshooting pressure points while minimizing analysis time.
  • Free space can be measured, calculated, or manually entered providing maximum flexibility in accommodating special sample types and emphasizing speed when needed. Helium is not required.
